"Pursuit of Equality" is a firsthand account of the heady "Winter of Love" in San Francisco, when over 4000 same-sex couples tied the knot. San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom's in-laws provided the footage, filming in his offices and interviewing participants. The first couple who wed are Phyllis Lyon and the late Del Martin, who had been together for a half-century. Later, talk show host Rosie O'Donnell and her partner Kelli Carpenter tie the knot.

"Pursuit of Equality" is mainly from the stylish,Kennedyesque mayor of San Francisco's perspective. Gavin Newsom comes across as arrogant in a way. He styles himself as a love revolutionary--when the gay marriage debate was an issue long before he came into public office. When the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage,Newsom was still a businessman. When Pres. Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act, Newsom hadn't run for public office. Some can argue that the gay marriage issue dates back to the '70s--when a male couple in Pueblo,Colorado tried to tie the knot. It was enough that California stopped using gender-neutral language in marriage law. There were gay marriage debates in the '90s; they continue today with California's Prop.8.

"Pursuit of Equality" moves pretty fast as a documentary. There's plenty of action-from evangelicals ambushing the nuptials singing barbershop quartet- to a lesbian couple running to say their vows, only to arrive too late. There's some handheld camera that makes it feel firsthand.

"Pursuit of Equality" is an insightful look at the gay marriage movement in San Francisco, but not beyond that. It preaches to the choir. It takes for granted that people view marriage as a right. There isn't much depth in either side- from the dapper Gavin Newsom to the rants of Randy Thomasson. "Pursuit of Equality" doesn't pursue its story. It,is however,a compelling firsthand look at the "Winter of Love."
